President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern over the growing involvement of young people, including senior high school students, in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The President said enforcement measures alone would not be enough to address the problem, stressing the need to create alternative livelihood opportunities that would encourage young people to stay away from illegal mining.

He disclosed that the government was pursuing a dual approach involving law enforcement and job creation, with the proposed $10 billion New Economy Policy expected to play a central role in providing employment opportunities for the youth.

President Mahama made the remarks when he hosted members of the Western North Regional House of Chiefs at the Jubilee House in Accra on Tuesday afternoon.

The delegation was led by Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, President of the Western North Regional House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of the Sefwi Anhwiaso Traditional Area.

The chiefs were welcomed by the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga.

Western North Regional Minister Wilbert Petty Brentum introduced the delegation and expressed appreciation to the traditional authorities for their cooperation in managing the affairs of the region.

The President’s remarks highlight the government’s focus on addressing the economic pressures that can draw young people into illegal mining, alongside efforts to enforce laws against the practice.

The proposed jobs plan is intended to expand economic opportunities for young people, although further details on its implementation and specific employment targets were not provided in the supplied report.
