Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah, a veteran journalist, writer and son of Ghana’s founding President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, has died in Cairo, Egypt, aged 68.

The Nkrumah family announced his death in a statement issued by his younger sister, Samia Nkrumah. He passed away on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, following a prolonged illness.

According to the family, Gamal had been receiving care at a rehabilitation centre in Cairo after suffering a stroke. His burial is scheduled for October 17 in Egypt, in accordance with Islamic tradition.

Born in Accra in 1958, Gamal was the son of Dr Kwame Nkrumah and his Egyptian wife, Fathia Nkrumah. He built a career in journalism and international affairs, becoming known for his commentary on African politics, global developments and Pan-Africanism.

He served as an editor at Al-Ahram Weekly, the English-language publication of Egypt’s Al-Ahram press organisation, where he worked for more than 15 years. During that period, he covered international affairs and examined political and social developments shaping Africa and the wider world.

Gamal also pursued higher education at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, where he earned a doctorate in political science.

In its statement, the Nkrumah family described him as an intellectually curious and independent thinker who remained committed to justice, human dignity, African unity and international solidarity.

The family said his work reflected his dedication to examining the political, social and cultural forces influencing Africa and the international community. It added that although he carried forward aspects of his father’s legacy, he developed his own reputation through his professional achievements and principles.

Gamal is survived by his younger sister, Samia Nkrumah, a Ghanaian politician and former Member of Parliament for Jomoro who also served as chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), and his younger brother, Sekou Nkrumah, a writer and political activist.

The family expressed gratitude to the medical professionals and caregivers who supported him during his illness in Cairo, as well as to the governments and people of Ghana and Egypt for their assistance.

It has requested privacy during the mourning period and said further details about memorial arrangements would be communicated in due course.
